Dr. Holbert & Associates, Optometrists

Good vision is essential for your child’s learning, development, and success in school. At Dr. Holbert & Associates, we provide comprehensive eye exams for children of all ages in a comfortable, kid-friendly environment.

When Should My Child Have an Eye Exam?

The American Optometric Association recommends: a first eye exam at 6 months of age, a second exam at age 3, an exam before starting first grade (age 5-6), and annual exams through age 18 for children who wear glasses or contacts, or every two years for children without vision problems.

What We Check

A pediatric eye exam goes beyond just reading an eye chart. Our doctors evaluate visual acuity and refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism), eye alignment and coordination (checking for crossed eyes or lazy eye), focusing ability, color vision, and overall eye health. We use age-appropriate testing methods, including picture charts and retinoscopy for children who are too young to read letters.

Signs Your Child May Have a Vision Problem

Watch for these warning signs: squinting or tilting the head to see, sitting too close to the TV or holding books very close, rubbing eyes frequently, avoiding reading or close-up activities, complaints of headaches or tired eyes, difficulty concentrating in school, and losing their place while reading.

Vision and Learning

Up to 80% of what children learn in school is presented visually. An undiagnosed vision problem can be mistaken for a learning disability, ADHD, or behavioral issues. A comprehensive eye exam can identify vision problems that may be holding your child back.

Is Your Child Nearsighted?

If your child’s prescription gets stronger every year, ask us about myopia management. We offer Ortho-K, MiSight 1 Day, Stellest lenses, and low-dose atropine at our Sunnyvale and Santa Clara offices.
