Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, usually due to elevated pressure inside the eye. It is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, but with early detection and treatment, vision loss from glaucoma can be prevented or slowed significantly.
Why Screening Is Critical
Glaucoma is called the silent thief of sight because it typically causes no pain and no symptoms until significant, irreversible vision loss has already occurred. By the time you notice peripheral vision loss, up to 40% of your optic nerve fibers may be damaged. Regular screening is the only way to catch glaucoma early.
Who Is at Risk?
You may be at higher risk for glaucoma if you are over age 60, have a family history of glaucoma, are African American or Hispanic, have high eye pressure, are very nearsighted or farsighted, have had an eye injury, have diabetes, or use corticosteroid medications long-term.
How We Screen for Glaucoma
Our glaucoma screening includes tonometry (measuring your eye pressure), pachymetry (measuring your corneal thickness, which affects pressure readings), visual field testing (checking your peripheral vision), and optic nerve evaluation using digital imaging and OCT scans.
If glaucoma is detected, your doctor will discuss treatment options, which may include prescription eye drops, laser treatment, or referral to a glaucoma specialist for advanced cases. Dr. Scott Holbert is certified in glaucoma diagnosis and treatment.
